The World University: Changing With The Times

By Kathy Schurdevin, President/Executive Director, World University

Greetings Dear Members and Friends of the World University!

First, I would like to acknowledge and bless each of our members, Trustees and friends in this time that has shown us great challenges, joys and sorrows in our personal lives and the lives of our people as a global community. We are a strong, brilliant people and the love, kindness, compassion and servitude that you have all shown has been remarkable.

As the World University President/Executive Director, I have been assisted in a daunting task to run the World University with a Board of Trustees that has been ever present and supportive. I have an assistant, Ms. Evelyn Green and her husband Chuck, who have volunteered their time, love, expertise and goodwill beyond what could ever be expected and I am eternally grateful. We have also been blessed with the wisdom and assistance of Ms. Barbara Griggs, our newest Trustee, who has been invaluable in keeping us focused and on track as we move forward. With minimal resources we have continued on with determination and the hope that our World University will grow into the international presence that will unite our humanity in love and peace through education.

The World University, after 12 years of struggling with the US government was again granted tax exempt status as an Educational Organization, a 501c3. This will allow all donations made to the WU from USA members to be tax deductible. This was a great triumph and, while costing us much time, energy and financial resources, will be a great asset to all current and future operations.

Unfortunately, the World University Roundtable did not fair as well. The WUR, as most of you know, closed at the end of 2008 due to insolvency as a result of the US tax situation. All members and Trustees were grandfathered into the World University and we continue to greatly appreciate their presence in the World University family. Our Founder, Dr. H. John Zitko, in his visionary keynote address at the inception of the WUR in 1946 had stated, “The World University Roundtable shall be given a continuous existence until such a time as it may become a part of the Great School which is to succeed and absorb it.” That time had come and the absorption flowed with grace and ease.

The World University is moving forward into this new era with a new program, the World University Institute of Peace and Reconciliation Program, which will be launched very soon.

This Peace Program is designed to educate world citizens in all aspects of the peace process, beginning with peace within one’s self and ending in the skills, knowledge and ability to effectively be a leader and educator of peace, both at home and in the international community. It will involve both online classroom and experiential education.

This course is being developed and will be managed by Tina Neilson, a professor from the University of Maine and one of our esteemed Founder members. We are very blessed to have her on our faculty. The introductory class for this program will begin soon. Please watch the WU website for future details.

As we have been watching the daily ever-changing needs of our planet, we are also looking at a establishing a program designed to use the practical applications of peace to both assist those traumatized by our world events and to prepare the frontline caregivers to deal most effectively in their service to humanity. This would be designed for all forms of medical personnel, the military, National Guard, chaplains, and spiritual advisors. Once completed, it is our hope that the United Nations may assist us in funding and promoting this program.

The Peace Program will be a great foundation course for the World University. Below you will find the Twelve Departments as envisioned by Dr. Zitko, with those people listed who have expressed interest in the past in managing these departments. Please contact us if you feel called to participate in the further development of these programs and make this World University come alive with the wisdom that you all have to share. We look forward to working with you.

World University International Working Conference

May 21-23, 2010

By Kathy Schurdevin, President/Executive Director, World University

The World University is having an International Working Conference here at the World University in Benson, AZ, USA, on May 21-23, 2010. This will be a working conference dedicated to moving the World University forward quickly and profoundly in ways most needed at this time on our mother earth, for her and all people. It will be an opportunity to meet and work side by side with some of our most incredible international members and teachers.

This Conference is quite different from the other WU Conferences that have been held historically. At this Conference, we are asking that all who attend come with the clear intention to work and assist us in finding tangible solutions to aid in the survival of the World University, which is, at this time, running very low in funds. The life and breath of the World University may well depend on the solutions that materialize from our best minds at this Conference.

We would be most delighted to have you join us. If attendance is not possible, please know that your suggestions, comments, and concerns are most welcome via email.

At the conference, we will be doing a presentation on the WU Peace Program. This program will be focused on training methods of peaceful world leadership in all levels and all faiths for the international community to be effective in the service of their Soul's purpose during these rapidly changing times. We will also ask that all members devote time and energy to promote the World University—this is the only way to maintain its sustainability. We will have instructional classes at the Conference on fundraising and effective scripting to achieve our goals. We are also looking for members who wish to donate their time in producing classes online or in person to assist in the growth of the World University curriculum. If you have skills and knowledge you wish to share on an international level that are at one with the World University Mission and Vision, please let me know and you may present this as part of the Conference Agenda.

If you have not received your invitation to the Conference, please contact us at worldu@intergate.com or call 520-586-2985 to request an invitation and further information.

WORLD UNIVERSITY ON THE MOVE

By Evelyn Green, Secretary

Greetings from the World University!

It is hard to believe, but we have arrived at the first decade in this millennium. The World University is steadily making progress and moving forward to reach our goal of ushering forth world peace leaders through education. We are excited to be a part of a growing movement of conscious awareness of our place and actions in this world. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we reach out to the citizens of the world.

For the first time we have successfully secured insurance coverage for the World University property. We accomplished getting the swimming pool area fenced with safety lock gates which were required to get insurance. This enables us to have people on the campus for maintenance, classes, or seminars with more security. Future planning includes a new administrative building, library, greenhouse, museum, and workshop. We have already outgrown our present library!

We plan on organizing a peace conference in the future. We want to conduct seminars at the campus, but we have a lot of work to do and will need considerable finances to make this happen.

The Saguaro House has been cleaned and prepared for guests. We have purchased a new laptop computer and are securing wireless access. This is very exciting to us! Newsletters, membership and donation applications, and updates for the activities happening on the campus will be available on our website. We also hope to have books and other items to sell on the website. Of course, the most exciting thing at present is that we are almost ready to put a Peace Program course on line! We are looking forward to adding more courses in the future.

I have been doing research on the history of the property, and the main house, which is our administrative offices, was built in 1941. Kenneth and Elizabeth Gunter were the builders and we still have the growth chart of Shirley Gunter, the little girl who lived there. She lays at rest in the Texas Canyon Pioneer Cemetery in Dragoon, by the Amerind Foundation. The Gunters were involved in establishing the Amerind Foundation just a few miles from the World University.

I am seeking information to apply for Historical registration of the main house. Then, we can apply for grants to have it restored. The WU has 90 acres, four guest homes, the library, a pool, the main house, the old cook house, a storage building, and a meditation building. Two of the guest homes are ready to stay in, and all the buildings need work. We want to make this into a place of beauty and peace for all who come to the campus. We need all your support and help to make this dream come true!

Our pond is an absolute delight for us. We meditate there and enjoy our gold fish (we were worried about them when a beautiful Blue Heron visited us on a regular basis last summer, but they were hiding)! We have a local artist nearby who kindly donated the goldfish and pump system to maintain the beauty of the pond. He often comes to photograph or paint the fish in the pond. We hope he will be one of our teachers of art.

Last August, Kathy and I attended the Arizona Alliance of Non-Profits Grants classes. We gained useful information and insight to guide us. We have much preparation to do before we can apply for the grants. We will be collaborating with others who can assist in promoting the World University on a global level so we can bring Dr. Zitko’s dream to fruition and touch the world with Peace.

We are grateful to all of you for your past and continued support! We believe that this year will prove to be a dynamic success and with your help, we will make a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Peace and Blessings to you all.

CREATING GLOBAL PEACE PROGRAMS AT THE

WORLD UNIVERSITY

By Kristina Passman Nielson, PhD

I would like to introduce myself. I am Kristina Passman Nielson, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Maine. I have also directed the University’s Peace and Reconciliation Studies Program and developed the Masters level graduate program in Peace and Reconciliation Studies.

Kath Schurdevin and I have found mutual interests in teaching peace through the World University. A three-level (online) articulated curriculum has been designed that will build knowledge, understanding, and skills. The pilot course, a short course of six weeks that will introduce the central ideas to students, will hopefully prove inviting and stimulating to our learners. Our goal is to build a true learning community through this endeavor, and reach those who are moved to study and work for peace and reconciliation.

The logistics of creating a revolutionary and credible program of Global Peace Studies are as complex as they are important.

The Global Peace Program is on the agenda for the May working conference. Please bring, or email, your ideas. I look forward to working with you on this innovative project.
